This month highlighting Asian influence in fashion and design, it’s been intriguing looking back to study the French interpretations of Chinoiserie and French colonial Indochine styles. These enduring elements are seemingly everywhere lately. Next month the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Anna Wintour Costume Center and Asian Art galleries will host the annual Met gala in honor of the upcoming exhibit “China: Through the Looking Glass.” The exhibit will explore the impact of Chinese design elements on Occidental fashions and celebrate designer pieces that exemplify this stunning aesthetic.
The Costume Institute isn’t the only one diving deep into the Asian whispers found in current fashion, Vogue insists on seeing these looks from the likes of Isabel Marant, Giambattista Valli and J. Mendel’s FW 15 shows on the red carpet at the Met Gala. The S/S 2015 runways were filled with designers dabbling in the Asian arts: Clover Canyon with their bright prints, Alexander McQueen with Geisha elements.
