Marc's Festival of Lights

Joelle Renee Benoliel

Marc Chagall [French, born Russia (present-day Belarus), 1887-1985]: (detail) America Windows, 1977. Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, USA. A gift of Marc Chagall, City of Chicago, and the Auxiliary Board, commemorating the American bicentennial in memory of Mayor Richard J.Daley. © 2010 Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York / ADAGP, Paris. ©

Marc Chagall was a Russian born Jew, who lived most of his life away from home. Surviving through the Holocaust, he was known to express his longings and losses through his paintings and masterpieces. One can only imagine the inspiration he took from the Festival of Lights, being reminded of the triumph and the survival of the Jewish people.
