The New Year's Liquid Metallics

Erin Burke

While metallics have always been a holiday staple, this year's liquid metal fabrics and paired down silhouettes feel both glamorous and refreshingly modern for everything from pants to purses, just in time to shimmer on the dance floor for New Year's Eve.

Cloth of gold, woven out of silk threads wrapped in the precious metal, is as old as style itself. References abound, from the Greek's Golden Fleece to David's Psalms. Its modern equivalent is lamé, a French term originally used to describe the overlapping plates in a suit of armor. Modern lamé is woven from metallic yarns, and it has been popular since the 1930’s as Hollywood starlets embraced it as an extension of their glamour on the silver screen.

Vintage stores can be a great source for lamé pieces from the thirties to the seventies and we found pre-owned designer pieces in stunning metallics from Roberto CavalliDolce & Gabbana and Bill Blass

Shine on you crazy diamond.
